Boost Your Ph.D. 101: Tips, Tricks, and Secrets to Succeed

Your paper got accepted. Congratulations! Now what?

Publishing research is only the beginning. From navigating copyright agreements and Open Access to understanding citation metrics, managing your scientific identity, and surviving academic bureaucracy, there’s plenty that nobody tells you when you start a PhD.

In this course, held for students in the PhD Program in Computer Science at the University of Salerno, Prof. Luigi Libero Lucio Starace (SQuIDS Lab) presents a practical introduction to the academic research ecosystem, covering:

  • Publishing research: Publication types, peer review, copyright, Open Access, and preprints.
  • Navigating academia: DOI, ORCID, IRIS, Scopus, Web of Science, and scholarly databases.
  • Understanding research evaluation: Citations, h-index, journal quartiles, conference rankings, and the Italian research assessment system.
  • Making research count: Sharing software and datasets, increasing research visibility, collaborating effectively, and working with advisors.

Through real-world examples, live demonstrations, and interactive quizzes, the course helps early-stage researchers navigate academia and avoid some of its most common pitfalls.
